Program overview

An Instrument Rating allows a properly qualified and current pilot to operate an airplane under Instrument Flight Rules, commonly called IFR. Unlike visual flying, instrument flying requires the pilot to control and navigate the airplane primarily by reference to the flight instruments. Instrument pilots learn to operate within the air traffic control system, interpret changing weather conditions, fly instrument departure and arrival procedures, navigate along IFR routes, and conduct instrument approaches.

An Instrument Rating allows a properly qualified and current pilot to operate under Instrument Flight Rules.

It allows the pilot to fly in conditions in which outside visual references may be limited, provided the flight is legal, the pilot is current and proficient, and the aircraft is appropriately equipped and approved.

The rating does not allow a pilot to fly safely in every type of weather. Thunderstorms, icing, severe turbulence, aircraft limitations, pilot proficiency, and other hazards must still be carefully considered.

Students training consistently may complete the program in approximately 1–4 months.

Students flying less frequently may take longer. Completion time depends on:

The Instrument Rating requires 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot in command, including at least 10 hours in airplanes.

FAA definitions and logging rules can vary depending on the certificate or rating being pursued. Your instructor should review your logbook and individual flights to determine whether previously logged cross-country experience qualifies toward the Instrument Rating requirement.

An Instrument Rating does not automatically require a new class of medical certificate.

However, you must hold the appropriate medical qualification for the privileges and operations you intend to exercise.

Pilots pursuing professional aviation careers are encouraged to consider their long-term medical-certification needs before beginning advanced training.

An Instrument Rating alone does not authorize a pilot to fly for compensation or hire.

Professional flying generally requires additional certificates, ratings, experience, and qualifications.

However, the Instrument Rating is an essential step for most professional pilots and is generally required before or in connection with advanced Commercial Pilot training.
